While AquaTru's long lasting filters significantly reduce the amount of single use plastic, a certain amount of waste is produced from used filters when those filters do need to be changed. We do not currently have a recycling program, but we are looking into developing one in the near future.
We recommend that you can contact your local recycler to see if they accept used filters or your local city water management department to get their recommendations about recycling used filters.
Our filters are made out of PP (Plastic #05). The AquaTru unit itself can be recycled at an e-waste site. The majority of the housing and the tap water tank is made out of ABS plastics. (Plastic code 09).
We do not recommend cutting open your filters to separate the filter materials from the plastic yourself. Your filters trap all of those toxic contaminants you wanted to remove from your water, and if you cut them open, you may expose yourself to those concentrated contaminants. If you cannot find a recycling option, we recommend throwing away the filters.
