Descaling is needed in areas with hard water to prevent scale build-up in the AquaTru Pump and Reverse Osmosis filter, which can reduce or block flow. (See: What is waste water? Can AquaTru filter hard water?)
Perform these steps before flow is completely lost, as descaling without flow may fail and low flow can damage the pump.
When to descale?
Descale if filtering takes over 25 minutes per tank; a new unit should filter in 10-15 minutes.
Needed Tools:
- Descaling kit (available on our website)
- 1 gallon of purified water (or low TDS water)
- 2 packets of AquaTru Descaling Powder
- 1 kettle or pot for warming water
- 1 thermometer (water should be 100-120°F, not boiling)
- 1 new AquaTru RO filter (if filtering time exceeds 25 minutes)

Descaling Procedure
Ensure the tap tank is clean and free of scale. Weekly cleaning is recommended in hard water areas.
- Remove filter cover, wait 60 seconds, then remove filters.
- Install AquaTru Descaling Filters, aligning red arrows.
- Heat purified water to 100-120°F; do not boil.
- Fill the tap tank to ½ inch below the handle.
- Add 2 packets of Descaling Powder and stir for 30 seconds.
- Place the tap tank on the base, filter for 5 minutes, then soak for 15 minutes.
- Pour water from the clean tank into the tap tank and filter again.
- After filtering, discard water from both tanks.
- Run 2 more tanks of cold tap water through the system.
- Remove Descaling Filters, reinstall original filters, and replace RO filter if needed.
- Clean both tanks with soap and water before next use.
For regular maintenance, descale monthly to extend RO filter life.
