The unpredictable behavior of your AquaTru Carafe unit is likely due to scale buildup. Mineral deposits can clog the pump, reducing water pressure and causing the unit to shut down. The system also stops when the back tap tank runs dry, as it needs a consistent water supply. To fix this, perform a descaling procedure to restore functionality and efficiency.
You can find comprehensive instructions on how to descale your AquaTru Carafe or AquaTru Carafe Smart by following the instructions provided below.
Be sure to read through these guidelines thoroughly to ensure you follow the procedure correctly.
When to descale?
Descale if filtering takes over 25 minutes per tank; a new unit should filter in 10-15 minutes.
Needed Tools:
- Descaling kit (available on our website)
- 3/4 of a gallon of purified water (or low TDS water)
- 1 packet of AquaTru Descaling Powder
- 1 kettle or pot for warming water
- 1 thermometer (water should be 80-120°F, not boiling)
- 1 new AquaTru Carafe RO filter (if filtering time exceeds 25 minutes)

Descaling Procedure
Ensure the tap tank is clean and free of scale. Weekly cleaning is recommended in hard water areas.
- Heat purified water to 80-120°F; DO NOT USE BOILING WATER!
- Fill the tap tank to ½ inch below the handle. Add 1 packet of Descaling Powder and stir for 30 seconds.
- Remove the tap tank from your AquaTru. wait 60 seconds, then remove filters.
- Install AquaTru Descaling Filters, making sure the locking mechanism is in place.
- Place the tap tank on the base, filter for 5 minutes, turn off the unit, then soak for 15 minutes. Do not leave it longer than 30 minutes. After the 15 minutes have passed turn the unit back on and let it finish filtering the descaling solution.
- Pour water from the clean water carafe into the tap tank and filter again.
- After filtering, discard water from both tanks.
- Filter a total of 4 full tanks of cold tap water through the AquaTru after descaling.
- Remove Descaling Filters, reinstall original filters. If your filtering time remains at 30 minutes or more, you will need to replace your RO Filter at this time.
- Clean both tanks with soap and water before next use.
It is worth noting that we strongly advise you to consider purchasing a Reverse Osmosis (RO) filter alongside the Descaling Kit. When the AquaTru unit ceases to filter water due to scaling, it is often indicative that the RO filter has also accumulated a significant amount of scale. Therefore, completing the descaling process without replacing the RO filter may not effectively resolve the underlying issue.
For regular maintenance, descale monthly to extend RO filter life.
